Measuring Guide - Own fabric Roller Blinds
Accurate measurements are essential when ordering replacement blinds, blind parts or custom-made blinds. Our simple measuring guides explain exactly where to measure for recess fitting, outside fitting and sash window installations, helping you achieve a perfect fit every time.
1. Inside Recess Fit
A blind fitted inside the window recess.
When to Choose This Option
Choose an inside recess fit when you want the blind to sit neatly within the window opening. This creates a clean, built-in appearance and leaves the window sill visible.
How to Measure
Width
Measure the width of the recess in three places:
-
Top
-
Middle
-
Bottom
Use the smallest measurement.
Drop
Measure the height of the recess in three places:
-
Left side
-
Centre
-
Right side
Use the smallest measurement.
Important
-
Measure from wall to wall inside the recess.
-
Check there are no obstructions such as handles, vents, or tiles.
-
Do not make any deductions. The blind manufacturer will allow for clearance where required.
2. Outside Recess Fit (Exact Fit)
A blind fitted outside the window recess or reveal.
When to Choose This Option
Choose an outside recess fit when:
-
The window recess is too shallow.
-
You want to cover the entire window opening.
-
You wish to reduce light gaps around the edges.
-
You want to hide an unattractive window frame.
How to Measure
Width
Measure the exact width you would like the blind to cover.
As a guide, add:
-
50-100mm (2-4 inches) beyond each side of the window opening where space allows.
Drop
Measure from where the blind will be fixed down to where you would like it to finish.
As a guide:
-
Allow 50-100mm above the window.
-
Extend below the sill if desired.
Important
-
Check there is sufficient fixing surface above the window.
-
Ensure the blind will clear any window handles when lowered.
-
Order the exact finished fabric size required. The outside of bracket to bracket size will be 35mm greater.
3. Sash Window Fit (On Architrave)
A blind fitted on the wooden architrave of a sash window.
When to Choose This Option
This method is popular for traditional sash windows where the blind is fitted on the decorative timber architraves rather than inside a deep recess.
It provides a neat appearance while allowing the sash window to retain its original character.
How to Measure
Width
Measure the distance between the outside edges of the architrave.
Measure:
-
Top
-
Middle
-
Bottom
Use the smallest measurement.
Drop
Measure from the top of architrave to the desired finishing point.
Measure:
-
Left side
-
Centre
-
Right side
Use the smallest measurement.
Important
-
Check that window handles, catches and locks will not interfere with the blind.
-
Ensure there is sufficient flat fixing area
on the architrave. -
Do not make any deductions unless specifically instructed.
