The Best Fabrics for Lamination

The ideal fabrics for lamination are light-to-medium weight, tightly woven, and dimensionally stable.

  • 100% Cotton
Takes adhesive incredibly well, stays flat, and comes in infinite prints/colours.

  • Linen & Linen Blends
Provides a beautiful, high-end textured look that filters light elegantly.

  • Polyester Blends
Highly durable, resistant to fading, and less prone to wrinkling or warping during processing.

  • Poly-Cotton Blends
Offers the stability and crispness of cotton with the durability and wrinkle-resistance of polyester.

  • Faux Silk / Sleek Synthetics
Gives a luxurious sheen without the vulnerabilities of real silk.

Unsuitable Fabrics

Fabrics to Avoid (Or Use with Extreme Caution)

Some fabrics react poorly to the lamination process, either because they can't handle the heat/glue, or because they are too bulky to roll up properly.

  • Heavy or Thick Fabrics: Velvet, heavy chenille, thick wool, and chunky embroideries. They become too thick to roll up into the blind mechanism and will jam.

  • Open or Loose Weaves: Loose linens, coarse burlap, or open knits. The laminating backing adhesive can seep through the holes to the front of the fabric, ruining it.

  • Highly Stretchy Fabrics: Anything with heavy Lycra, spandex, or loose jersey knits. They distort and warp when pulled onto the laminating machine.

  • Real Silk: Silk is incredibly sensitive to moisture, heat, and adhesive. It can water-spot, bubble, or degrade during the lamination process.

  • Embellished Fabrics: Fabrics with heavy sequins, plastic beads, or raised metallic threads that might melt or create uneven bulk.

Important Information Regarding Customer Supplied Fabrics

Whilst every effort is made to achieve the best possible results, the behaviour of customer supplied fabrics during the lamination process cannot be guaranteed.

Fabric composition, age, weave, coatings, dyes and previous treatments can all affect the final outcome. For this reason, Blind Parts Hub cannot accept responsibility for any changes in appearance, texture, colour, shrinkage, distortion or performance that may occur during the lamination process.

All customer supplied fabrics are submitted for lamination at the customer's own risk.

Lamination Process

Most curtain and furnishing fabrics are not designed to operate as roller blinds. Lamination adds a specialist backing layer which helps stabilise the fabric, improve durability and ensure the blind rolls smoothly. This process allows many decorative fabrics to be transformed into practical, made-to-measure roller blinds while maintaining the appearance of the original material. To create a roller blind from your own fabric, the material is first laminated to a specialist FR backing fabric (white, cream or blackout. This process helps stabilise the fabric, reducing stretching, fraying and distortion while providing the strength needed for smooth roller blind operation. The edges are all overlocked to stop fraying. The result is a professional-quality blind that combines your chosen design with the performance of a custom made roller blind fabric.During the lamination process the fabric is exposed to very high heat, in very rare circumstances this can distort fabric. Blind Parts  Hub can not be held responsible and a refund of fabric cost is not recoverable

Choosing the Right Fabric for Roller Blinds

When selecting fabric for customer own fabric roller blinds, it is important to choose a material suitable for roller blind manufacture. Many furnishing and curtain fabrics can be successfully used, but factors such as weight, stretch, thickness and pattern direction should be considered before production.

Suitable fabrics can often be transformed into beautiful bespoke roller blinds through the lamination process, creating a stable and durable material that performs well in everyday use. Whether you are matching existing curtains, coordinating room décor or creating a completely unique blind design, selecting the correct fabric helps ensure the best possible results.

Our fabric suitability guide is designed to help customers understand the key considerations before ordering. If you are unsure whether your chosen fabric is suitable, we are always happy to provide advice before manufacture begins.
