Re-cording a Roman blind can feel a bit daunting , but it’s actually a very straight forward process.

Whether your old cord snapped or frayed, here is a step-by-step guide to getting your Roman blind up and running again.

🛠️ What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather your supplies:

  • Replacement Roman blind cord (Make sure it’s the right thickness, usually 1.2mm to 1.4mm)

  • Scissors

  • A lighter or matches (to melt and seal the ends of nylon cords)

  • A large needle or a safety pin (optional, but helps pull the cord through small loops)

  • Tape measure

📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Take the Blind Down and Lay it Flat

  • Take the blind down (normally a couple of screws through a wooden baton.

  • Lay it face down on a flat surface (like a large table or the floor) so the lining, rods and rings etc are facing up.

  • Fully extend the blind it's full length.

Step 2: Remove the Old Cords

  • If the old cords are still in place, you could take a photo of cording for reference (thus us not necessary.

  • Untie or cut the knots at the very bottom rings and pull the old cords completely out.

Step 3: Measure and Cut Your New Cords

You will need a separate length of cord for each vertical row of rings on your blind

💡 The Golden Rule for new Cord length required :

For each row, the cord needs to be: (2 x the height of the blind) + (1 x the width of the blind). i.e. blind 100cms wide by 200cms drop, with 3 vertical rows of rings will need (2 200cms + 100cms = 500 cms per row, so full blind 500cms * 3 = 1500cms - 15 metres

Step 4: re-cord from the Bottom Up

Start with the vertical row of rings that is furthest away from a your pull side

  1. Tie the bottom: Take your first piece of cord and tie it securely to the very bottom ring of that row. (Give the knot a tiny melt with a lighter if it's nylon to stop it fraying or untying).

  2. Go straight up: Thread the cord straight up through every ring or tape loop in that vertical column then across through eyelets to your pull / control side, then let hang down 3/4 length of blind and cut cord.

Step 5: Repeat for other vertical rows

Step 6: Tie all cords ends together in loose knot

Step 7: Rehang blind on window

  • Undo temporary knot. When blind is hanging perfectly level, tie a permanent knot of all the cords together near top of blind.

  • Thread the cords ends through your wooden acirn or plastic pull-condenser (tassel), tie another knot inside it to secure it, and trim off the excess trailing cord.

⚠️ A Crucial Note on Child Safety

To prevent entanglement accidents, always install a blind safety cleat on the wall next to the window at least 150cms from the floor. Wrap the excess cord around the cleat in a figure-eight every single time you raise the blind so there are no dangling loops within reach of children or pets.
