What Is the Difference Between 1:1 vs 1:4 Roman Blind Mechanisms?

If you're replacing a Roman blind control mechanism, you may have come across controls described as 1:1 ratio and 1:4 ratio.

But what do those numbers actually mean – and which one should you choose?

The simple answer is that a 1:1 control raises the blind more quickly, while a 1:4 geared control requires less effort and is better suited to heavier Roman blinds.

The good news is that on compatible Roman blind tracks, changing between a 1:1 and 1:4 control can be very straightforward.

What Does 1:1 Ratio Mean on a Roman Blind?

A 1:1 Roman blind control provides direct movement.

In simple terms:

Pull the operating chain 10cm and the blind moves approximately 10cm.

This makes raising and lowering the blind relatively quick because the movement of the chain is transferred directly to the blind.

A 1:1 mechanism is generally suitable for Roman blinds weighing up to approximately 3kg.

For many smaller and medium-sized domestic Roman blinds, this is perfectly adequate.

What Does 1:4 Ratio Mean on a Roman Blind?

A 1:4 Roman blind control uses gearing to provide greater mechanical advantage.

In simple terms:

Pull the operating chain 40cm and the blind moves approximately 10cm.

You therefore need to pull more chain to raise or lower the blind by the same distance.

The advantage is that considerably less effort is required.

A 1:4 mechanism is generally suitable for Roman blinds weighing up to approximately 6kg, making it particularly useful for larger or heavier blinds.

Which Ratio Do I Need for My Roman Blind?

If possible, the best method is to weigh the complete Roman blind.

Importantly, this means the complete blind rather than simply weighing or estimating the fabric.

A finished Roman blind can include:

  • Face fabric

  • Lining

  • Blackout lining

  • Rods

  • Bottom bar

  • Other components

All of these contribute to the weight the mechanism needs to lift.

As a general rule:

Up to approximately 3kg → 1:1 control

Approximately 3kg to 6kg → 1:4 control

However, most people repairing an existing Roman blind aren't going to take the blind down and weigh it before ordering a replacement mechanism.

So there are some useful practical guidelines.

Can I Choose the Ratio Based on the Width of the Blind?

Width can provide a useful indication, although it shouldn't be considered on its own.

As a practical guide:

Roman blinds up to approximately 1.5 metres wide → 1:1 is often suitable

Roman blinds over approximately 1.5 metres wide → consider a 1:4 mechanism

However, width doesn't tell the whole story.

A relatively narrow blind with a long drop and heavy blackout lining could weigh considerably more than a wider blind made from lightweight fabric.

You should therefore also consider the drop, fabric and lining.

Does Blackout Lining Make a Difference?

Yes. When choosing 1:1 vs 1:4 Roman blind mechanisms this can.

Blackout lining adds additional weight to a Roman blind.

The same applies to heavier face fabrics and larger blinds with long drops.

For example, two Roman blinds could both be 1.4 metres wide but place very different loads on their control mechanisms if one is made from lightweight fabric and the other uses heavy fabric with blackout lining.

That's why the actual weight of the finished blind is the best guide whenever it can be established.

What If My Blind Is Close to 3kg?

This is where we'd generally favour the 1:4 mechanism.

A 1:1 control may technically be capable of operating a blind approaching its recommended maximum weight, but the mechanism will be working harder every time the blind is raised.

Using a 1:4 geared mechanism reduces the effort required to lift the blind.

If the blind is borderline, choosing the 1:4 can therefore be a sensible longer-term option.

The trade-off is simply that you'll need to pull more chain to raise or lower the blind.

Is a 1:4 Roman Blind Mechanism Better Than 1:1?

Not necessarily.

A 1:4 mechanism isn't an “upgrade” that every Roman blind needs.

For a small, lightweight blind, a 1:1 mechanism has the advantage of being quicker to operate.

Pulling 50cm of chain will move the blind by approximately 50cm.

With a 1:4 mechanism, considerably more chain movement would be required to achieve the same blind movement.

So if a blind is comfortably within the capabilities of a 1:1 mechanism, there's nothing wrong with using one.

The benefit of 1:4 is mechanical advantage, not speed.

Can I Replace a 1:1 Roman Blind Control With a 1:4?

Yes – on compatible Roman blind tracks, the 1:1 and 1:4 controls are fully interchangeable.

You don't need to replace or modify the track simply because you're changing the control ratio.

This can make upgrading an existing Roman blind from 1:1 to 1:4 surprisingly straightforward.

Typically, only basic tools such as a small Phillips screwdriver and Allen key are required to change the control.

Likewise, a 1:4 control can be replaced with a compatible 1:1 control if the blind is sufficiently light and quicker operation is preferred.

Should I Upgrade From 1:1 to 1:4?

There are several situations where it may make sense.

Consider changing to 1:4 if:

  • Your Roman blind is relatively large

  • The blind is approaching 3kg in weight

  • Heavy fabric has been used

  • The blind has blackout or other substantial lining

  • The blind has a long drop

  • Raising the blind feels unnecessarily heavy

  • You're replacing a failed 1:1 mechanism on a borderline blind

Because compatible 1:1 and 1:4 controls can be interchangeable, replacing a failed mechanism is also a good opportunity to reconsider whether the original ratio was the best choice for the blind.

What Happens If the Mechanism Is Too Small for the Blind?

Using a control close to or beyond its intended load means the mechanism has to work harder.

Operation may feel heavier and you could potentially shorten the working life of the control.

That's why we wouldn't automatically choose a 1:1 mechanism simply because that's what was previously fitted.

If the blind is large, heavy or close to the 1:1 mechanism's recommended limit, a compatible 1:4 replacement may be the better long-term choice.

How Can I Tell Which Ratio Is Currently Fitted?

If the existing control isn't clearly marked, operate the blind and compare how far you move the chain with how far the blind moves.

If approximately:

10cm of chain movement produces 10cm of blind movement → likely 1:1

If approximately:

40cm of chain movement produces 10cm of blind movement → likely 1:4

You don't need laboratory-level accuracy. The difference between the two ratios should be quite noticeable.

Still Not Sure Whether to Choose 1:1 or 1:4?

If possible, weigh the complete blind.

That gives you the best indication:

Up to 3kg → 1:1

3–6kg → 1:4

If weighing the blind isn't practical, consider its overall size, drop, fabric and lining.

As a rough guide, up to around 1.5 metres wide will often be suitable for 1:1, while larger or heavier blinds are more likely to benefit from 1:4.

And if you're unsure – particularly if the blind is approaching the limits of a 1:1 control – 1:4 is generally the safer choice.

It will take longer to raise and lower the blind, but the reduced effort required to lift the weight can make it the better long-term solution.

The difference between 1:1 and 1:4 Roman blind mechanisms is actually quite simple:

1:1 = faster operation for lighter blinds.

1:4 = slower operation but considerably less effort for heavier blinds.

Whenever possible, choose according to the weight of the complete blind rather than width alone.

And remember that width is only a guide – a long-drop Roman blind made with heavy fabric and blackout lining may need a stronger control even if it isn't particularly wide.

If you're close to the limit or simply aren't sure, we'd generally favour the 1:4 geared mechanism. It takes more chain movement to operate, but reducing the load on the control is often the better long-term choice.
